HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM PARADISE Wishing all of you a happy, prosperous and peaceful 2003! We hope the whole world can learn to live together in peace and respect differences of beliefs, casting aside jealosy and keeping a positive outlook on life.
Here in Puerto Vallarta we are constantly reminded of the glories of nature, with blue, sunny skies, colorful flowers, the misty mountains, the rivers and the ever changing sea. We are thankful for the friendly people of this area who always have a smile and make us feel so at home.
Thanks to the efforts of the City administration, the Malecon has been restored and most of the businesses that were affected by Hurricane Kenna are now open as if nothing ever happened.
The fantastic fireworks displays on the Malecon on New Year´s Eve provided by City Hall were magnificent, and throngs of revelers enjoyed the free music. Places were provided for families to eat on the beach to avoid the expensive restaurant cover charges. Of course the clubs and restaurants put on special menus and entertainment and most were filled up also.
The fireworks shows were seen around the bay between midnight and l a.m. as the state of Nayarit is one hour behind Vallarta. One of the most impressive sights was the grouping of dozens of yachts, the cruise ships, and smaller boats, many decked out with Christmas lights as they anchored in front of the Malecon for the midnight celebration, sounding their boat horns, and some shooting off rockets. The city is full of tourists from all over Mexico and the world, which is a much needed boost to the local economy.
May you make and keep your New Year´s resolutions and put on your list a visit to this paradise in the near future.
COBBLING CHARACTER Here is a poem written by our local friend, actor and writer, Alexander Curtis.
There´s a past that´s here for all to see in this Mexican town set by the sea.
There are cobbled lanes, and cobbled roads with cobbling donkeys, cobbling loads.
There´s character in the rough paved street with its balconied houses and dusty heat.
There are parks and rivers, golden sand, whilst flowered green abounds the land.
There´s a mountained backdrop to this town with a cresting sea ´neath the Malecon
In that softening sky each sunning day the herons swoop and strike and spray.
With boats and ´chutes and cabs and cars and tequilas in the tropical bars.
The sound of music, sound of song, sound of the fiddle and guitar along, are heard all day--at night abound. In buses, in bars--it´s the Mexican sound.
There are cobbling smells and cobbling sound, and a cobbling character easily found.
COMING EVENTS Old Town Art Walk dates for January are the 15th and 29th, with free cocktails in 11 galleries from 6 to 10 p.m. Pick up your map at any of the participating galleries. At Galeria Vallarta we are featuring two of your favorite artists this month. Carlos Cuevas on the 15th and Ruben Garcia on the 29th. Carlos, from San Luis Potosí, is famous for his realistic oil portrayals of indigenous women and children in their native dress and surroundings. He also paints scenes typical of his area of Mexico, featuring horses, and has done some fine seascapes in the style of the old masters. We are looking forward to seeing his new creations and will be glad to share them with you by email photos.
Ruben Garcia has painted two murals at our local University of Guadalajara campus, CUC, which are very impressive. We have recently received 4 lovely abstract canvases from him with the theme earth, fire, air and water, using his mixed media technique of oil, gold and lots of texture. Shown together these paintings make a bold statement for a large space in a business or villa. His traditional paintings are sensitive portraits of old people, showing their character and wisdom in his own special technique. Both artists will be present at their expositions, so this is a chance to meet and talk with them.
Claudia Nery´s wonderful show is still up at Galeria Vallarta On Juarez St. until Jan. 14. This exposition was entitled Desendencias and many of the paintings are accented with Monarch butterflies, against a backdrop of her typical profiles, suns, moons, and fish, all in beautifully coordinated colors. This exposition features more oil on canvas paintings than her previous exhibits, and I am sure you will find the artworks exciting as always.
Because of all the holiday rush and vacations, I have not received the schedule of events provided by the city culture department, which will not be ready until next week. You can check with the Tourist Dept. or the Culture Dept. at City Hall for information.
The Marina Art Night will be Friday, January 24th with new shows at Galeria Arte de las Americas, Galeria Flores, Galeria EM and Galeria Puerco Azul on the Yacht basin, and Galeria Vallarta and Galeria Meshik in Plaza de Neptuno. Refreshments will be served from 6 to 10 p.m. Galeria Vallarta will present the works of Cecelia Borjorquez, recently arrived in Puerto Vallarta from Mexico City. She works in various media and you will find her art very impressive.
Galeria Dante will present sculptor Rupert Getzen on Sat. Jan. 11th and bronze artist Luis Espiridíon on Jan. 25th.
There will be many fine films presented at Lópera, our downtown art theater located at Encino 287. Showings are at 4, 6, 8 and 10 p.m. Listings of the films are found in Vallarta Voice magazine. Don´t miss the film "Frida" starring Selma Hayak, which I just saw at the new theater complex on Francisco Villa St. Posters and cards of Frida Kahlo, as well as Diego Rivera are available at Galeria Vallarta.
A fund raiser cocktail party for Becas Vallarta, (who provide scholarships for deserving local children) will be held at the new "Liberté" club, Aguacate 407, on Friday, Jan. 24th from 6 to 8 p.m. Tickets are $150 pesos in advance and $200 at the Door, but seating is limited, so call Mary Ellis 222-1478 now to get your tickets, or email becasvallarta@yahoo.ca.
