WELCOME 2006

Puerto Vallarta is full to the brim with tourists and everyone welcomed 2006 with festivities at private parties, special dinners in our fine restaurants, but most fun of all were the street celebrations. Olas Altas Street and the Malecon were closed to traffic to allow street dances and of course our fabulous fireworks displays all around the bay.

One of our best features is the live music you will find in so many restaurants and bars, as well as daily musicians in the bandstand of our main plaza next to City Hall. Our city is always peaceful and safe, and everyone was hopeful for a new year that will bring freedom and peace for all the people of the world. Don´t forget to make and keep your New Year´s Resolutions all year long.

The art scene is buzzing with new exhibitions in all our many galleries. To check the schedule and map for the weekly Old Town Art Walks, go to http://www.banderasnews.com/0511/art-artwalk-map.htm. Be sure to reserve Wednesday nights from 6 to 10 for a great art experience when you are in town.

January is the month that brings the humpback whales to our bay for mating and if you are in the area be sure to take a tour to enjoy their antics. Local photographer and artist Rico Dickey has some impressive photos of the whales on display at Galeria Vallarta.

COMING ATTRACTIONS

Three of our top artists will present new works at Galeria Vallarta during January. Manuel Valles Gomez, the famous contemporary muralist/painter from Durango opened with some impressive acrylics and oils on Jan. 4th. On Jan 11 in addition to Manuel´s works, we will present watercolors of local scenes by Marco Antonio Diaz, sculptures and wall pieces handcrafted in metal by Ron Berg and jewelry by Fabio Vanin.

Jaime Cabrera, the artist from Mexico City who creates fantasy scenes in oils will present "Magicians and Bubbles" on Jan. 18th. We are looking forward to seeing the new paintings, since almost everything we had has been sold.

Claudia Nery just delivered several new paintings in her unique style which delights her collectors. Her next show will be Feb. 1 at Galeria Vallarta, and she also has exhibitions this month at the Westin Regina Resort lobby and the Hotel Premiere.

Galeria Gradiva, Ignacio Vallarta 179, will present Eddie Martinez on Jan. 6 from 7 to 10 p.m. This gallery specializes in art from Oaxaca.

Watch the PV Tribune and Vallarta Today English newspapers for more events, theater and concerts. Also Puerto Vallarta's liveliest website: www.banderasnews.com has loads of valuable information for you.

EARTHQUAKE SURVIVAL TIPS

Perhaps you do not live in an earthquake zone, but you never know when you may be traveling where one of Mother Nature´s surprises takes place. I thought this information was very informative and may help save some lives in case of a disaster.

These tips come from Doug Copp's article on the "Triangle of Life," dealing with earthquake survival. He is the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced rescue team.

1) DO NOT get under objects like desks or cars. People who do this are usually crushed to death.

2) Curl up in the fetal position NEXT to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) If you are in bed when an earthquake occurs simply roll off of the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed.

4) Do NOT stand under a doorway. If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

5) NEVER USE THE STAIRS. The stairs are the most likely part of the building to be damaged. After a quake they should be checked for damage even if the rest of the building is not damaged.

6) Get near the outside walls of the building or outside of them.

7) If you are in a vehicle get out of the vehicle and sit next to it. After the San Francisco earthquake all crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them.

8) Get beside a stack of paper. Paper does not compact and there are large voids surrounding stacks of paper.

SLOW DANCE

This poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a New York Hospital. It was sent by a medical doctor.

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say, "Hi" ?

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift....
Thrown away.

Life is not a race.
Do take it slower
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
