FEBRUARY...THE MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP
Our hearts go out to the families of the crew of the space shuttle and to those who lost loved ones and homes in the recent Colima earthquake. We felt the earth swaying here in Vallarta, but fortunately there was no damage.

Happy Valentine´s Day to everyone!
This is not just a time for young lovers, but a time to extend greetings and friendship to your family, neighbors and those less fortunate than we are. There are ample opportunities to participate in charitable events in Vallarta through the International Friendship Club, the Red Cross, Casa Hogar, and many more. PV Tribune and Vallarta Today carry notices about fund raising events to aid local charities. You can send free animated Valentine greeting cards and flowers from your computer at greeting-cards.com and other greeting card companies that you can find by searching the web. You will find some lovely jewelry creations especially designed for Valentine´s Day at Galeria Vallarta in both locations. Or select a painting or print that can be enjoyed every day of the year, whereas candy will only stay on your waistline.

Feb. 28 is the date for the Beca Charity Ball which provides scholarships for worthy Vallarta students, so get your tickets now at Galeria Vallarta. An article about this yearly event follows.

Remember the International Friendship Club Home Tours each Wednesday and Thursday morning--all for charity. Meet at Molina de Agua Hotel at 10 a.m. for tickets.

IFC members receive special discounts at Galeria Vallarta and many local restaurants and businesses. Check your IFC bulletin for information.

Feb. 19th Book Signing..."All is Safely Gathered In"

You are cordially invited to attend the launch of Peter Gray´s novel entitled "All is Safely Gathered In" at the La Petite France restaurant on Wednesday, Feb. 19th at 8 p.m.

Peter Gray is already a familiar name to Puerto Vallarta residents. 400 reproductions of his painting "Pidiendo Posada" have been sold here on behalf of the Becas Vallarta scholarship fund. For several months his witty articles about the game of golf have delighted readers of the PV Tribune. "Homes and Living" also features an article of his in each issue.

"All is Safely Gathered In" is a novel that combines the magical with the everyday reality of life in an English village. Some of the initial reactions to the book are:

"It is one of those very few books that you read where you are disappointed it ends - you hope there is more." University Lecturer - Jack Malone, Cincinnati, Ohio

"Just finished your book and loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed the development of your characters. They were colorful and you painted }an image that could be seen." - Dr. John Baldwin

"A great insight into English country life...and fun." - Kent Wallace

After the presentation Peter Gray will be signing copies of his book, which will be available for a donation of 175 pesos, all of which will go to the Becas Vallarta charity.

BECAS BALL INFORMATION
The annual dinner dance put on by the Becas Vallarta will be held on Friday, Feb. 28th at the Westin Regina Hotel. It will kick off with welcoming cocktails at 7:30 p.m. With so many events marking the high season, some people might wonder whether this is definitely one that they should make a point of attending. So it may be helpful to provide some reasons why this evening is as incredibly rewarding as it is enjoyable.

First of all, it has been for many years the biggest social event of the year. The one occasion for many residents to really dress up and amaze their friends, who have seen them only in shorts, sandals and T-shirts for months on end. It provides a cocktail hour in which old friendships can be renewed and new friendships be created. It provides a fine dinner in an elegant setting with a special décor themed to the idea of bringing happiness to children who need a helping hand to progress in life as educated adults. It provides a splendid band that will sweep young and old onto the dance floor for a romantic end to the night. And some lucky raffle winners will take home grand prizes such as a 20/21" Sony flat screen TV, color and stereo sound, a Daewood DVD/VCD/S-VCD/Audio CD//MP3 player, a Sears microwave oven, a Sharp VCR or an AIWA boombox-CD/Cassette Radio. Also there is a fantastic assortment of goods and services you can bid on at the silent auction. All this for only $45 dollars (450 pesos per person.) Raffle tickets are only one dollar or 10 pesos.

That only deals with the enjoyable part. The rewarding part is the satisfaction of knowing that the proceeds of this event go directly and entirely into providing scholarships for many of the brightest and poorest children in and around Vallarta. This is a task that Becas Vallarta has undertaken for the past 42 years. When it started there was only one high school in the city.. Now there are 12. Clearly, Becas Vallarta needs an ever growing level of support to keep up with this ever increasing demand. There are so many children in Puerto Vallarta who have all that it takes to succeed--except the financial means to stay on the rungs of the educational ladder that would make all the difference to their lives. Yet we know that educated children will become better citizens, better neighbors, better wives and better husbands.

For the year 2002-03 Becas Vallarta will support 110 students in junior high, 149 in senior high and 47 at university level. "Support" covers the provision of uniforms, shoes, gym clothes, school supplies, a solar calculator and dictionaries in Spanish and English plus a modest monthly allowance in cash to senior high and university students.

Each student is personally monitored throughout the time they receive Becas support. High standards are expected and they are met. Becas students served as volunteers at the concession stands at the World Golf Tournament held here in mid-December. The U.S. catering company personnel were enormously impressed by the enthusiasm, intelligence and competence of the students, which more than matched what they were accustomed to in the States, which is evidence of the all around value that flows from the Becas program.

Whether you find the enjoyment part of the Becas Ball more important than the rewarding part is up to each individual. Put the two together and you have an irrestible reason for attending on Feb. 28th.

Tickets are available at Galeria Dante, Basilio Badillo 269 and Galeria Vallarta, Juarez 263 and Plaza Neptuno, Local D 14/15, or from any Becas Vallarta member or call Mary Ellis, 222-1478 or Pat Bendix 221-5730. If you are not in town to attend, donations will be gladly received for this worthy cause.

Galeria Vallarta presents the great paintings of Dimitar and Helen Krustev from Ajijic on Feb. 12th. Dimitar was born in Bulgaria, has had a long and exciting life as an artist, photographer and writer, traveling all over the world and has chosen Mexico as his home. Helen was his student and she paints portraits of the the indigenous people of Mexico in acrylics, while Dimitar works in oils and mixed media. Both artists will be here for the exposition from 6 to 10 p.m.

February 26 is the date for Eduardo Iñiguez´ show of oil paintings. This popular artist from Guadalajara is well known for his stylized, bright paintings dedicated to fiestas, dancers and happy occasions. We are looking forward to seeing his latest creations.

Galeria Vallarta at Plaza Neptuno will participate in the Marina Art Night on Feb. 21 with the fantasy art of Hellmuth Bornemann. This local artist was born in Chile, has traveled in many countries, but has chosen Vallarta as his home. He also paints fine portraits and does commisions.

Jaime Cabrera, whose show of surreal and fantasy art in December was a near sell- out, will be represented at a new gallery opening soon in Maryland. We are eagerly awaiting new works soon from Jaime.

Galeria Vallarta at Neptune Plaza just received some unique ceramic sculptures by well-known sculptor Oscar Espinosa, based on sea themes.

The concert at the Camino Real will be Thursday, Feb. 6 at 9 p.m.

On Feb. 19 you will have an opportunity to hear Pat Henry telling about her solo voyage around the world in a small sailboat and see slides of her trip, as well as some of the paintings she created while traveling on this 8 year adventure. If you haven´t read the book "By the Grace of the Sea", be sure to get a copy. The presentation will be held at the Westin Regina Hotel at 7:30 p.m.

There are lots more events coming up, but there is not room for all of them here, so watch the newspapers for times and dates.

Remember February and March are whale watching months, and Vallarta is an ideal place to get a close look at these incredible mammals.
