MARCH--VALLARTA´S PERFECT MONTH
If you haven´t been here in March, you can´t believe the beauty of the deep blue sky, the flowering Primavera trees in yellow and pink, the deep reds, fuschia and pinks of the bougainvilla and the variable blue and turquoise of the calm sea. The temperature is ideal, with fresh breezes cooling you from the bright sun. You may need a light sweater at night, but you will be perfectly comfortable dining out in the open terrace restaurants.

There are such a variety of birds that inhabit this region, which I enjoy watching every day from my open air dining room, as they perch atop the tall bamboo plants. There are flocks of small green parrots that dart into the nearby jungle, racously announcing their arrival. The central plaza is full of pigeons (or palomas), so it is fun to sit on the park benches and watch the children playing and trying to catch them. Quite often lately we have been treated to music by a violinist who plays in the plaza - a welcome addition to Old Town. Of course the weekly band concerts continue in the bandstand on Sunday and Thursday nights, and there are frequent free concerts in Los Arcos outdoor theater.

One of the best things about living in Vallarta is the chance to know so many people from all over the world, and to always see someone you know when you go out for a walk around the downtown or Marina area. The many cultural events give people a chance to meet new friends and visit with those they have met in prior years.

Let´s not forget the availability of tropical fruits such as papaya, pineapple, guayaba, citrus fruits and avocados at reasonable prices - which we hear are extremely expensive in the U.S. This is a great place for a diet as the restaurants also offer delicious salads, non- fattening fish and chicken dishes, plus there are lots of opportunities for exercise, including health spas, pilates, yoga, swimming and walking. Why stay in the cold north, when our paradise offers so much?

COMING EVENTS
The Beca Ball on February 28 was a huge success, held at the Westin Regina Hotel, every table adorned with beautiful flower arrangements by Maripeppa Gonzalez, a delicious gourmet meal and great music for dancing. Everyone was dressed in their elegant best, with many of the men in tuxedos--something you rarely see in Vallarta. The businesses of the community went all out to donate all kinds of items, meals, tours, art, etc. for the silent auction and the guests were very generous in their purchases to help with the scholarships for the needy students of our city.

The Camino Real Hotel will hold their monthly free concert on Thursday, March 6 at 9 p.m. This is always a special event and is usually repeated on the following Friday at Los Arcos Theater, in case you miss the first concert.

The next Old Town Art Walk will be held on Wednesday, March 12 in the 11 galleries from 6 to 10 p.m. Attendance has been great at our recent events and everyone has expressed their enjoyment of this opportunity to meet the artists and be introduced to new artworks and techniques. Pick up your map at any of the participating galleries, the tourist office and hotels and follow the walk at your own pace.

Galeria Vallarta will present oil landscapes in realistic and impressionistic styles by Roberto Herrera, Moises Gomez and Nicho Becerra, from Mexico City and Guadalajara. These artists have reasonable prices and they portray the beauty of Puerto Vallarta and other Mexican locations in fine quality artworks.

On Wednesday, March 26, Galeria Vallarta will present watermedia by several well known artists, which will be announced in our online invitation.

On March 5, 6 and 7th the students of the American School will present "The Sound of Music" at the shool located on Albatros l, Marina Vallarta at 7:30 p.m. Call 221-1525 for information.

Sat. March 8 is the opening of the sculpture exhibit of Tellosa at Galeria Dante, Basilio Badillo 269 from 6 to 10 p.m., and a slide show and art talk about Impressionism will be held the same night at Judith Ewing Morlan Art Gallery, Miramar 237. Why not go to both?

March 8, 9 and 11 will be the dates for Carrie Chestnut´s "Lady and her Sax" at the Palm Lounge, Olas Altas 508. We heard this will be a good show.

Bonnie Miller will feature an open house at her El Patio Weaving Studio Corona 169 from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wed. March 12, and Bill Megrail will be the featured artist at Judith Ewing Gallery for the March 12th Art Walk.

There is a St. Patrick´s Day party on Monday, March 17 at the new Liberté Club, Aguacate 407, Altavista from 8-2 a.m.

Friday, March 21 is the final Marina Art Night of the season, so don´t miss it. Galeria Vallarta in Neptune Plaza will present oils by Carlos Cuevas, the popular artist from San Luis Potosi who specializes in beautiful renditions of the indigenous people of Mexico. Galeria Arte de las Americas, Galeria Flores, Galeria EM, Galeria Meshik and Puerco Azul Gallery will also be participating with new exhibitions. It is such fun to stroll along the yacht basin, with music, art and lots of great restaurants for an after the show dinner.

Sat. March 22 is the opening of Gabriel Colunga´s sculpture show at Galeria Dante from 6 to 10 p.m.

Spotlight Productions is presenting "A Night with Cole Porter" and the hilarious play "The Odd Couple" during March at Santa Barbara Restaurant Olas Altas 351. Call 222-4477 for dates and tickets.

For live music you will find jazz favorites Beverly and Willow on Friday and Saturday at the River Cafe, d´Rachel with her harp and flute at Archie´s Wok Wed. through Sunday nights, Don and Rhonda piano/guitar duo at Ibiza restaurant Wed. to Friday, Latin Jazz night on Thursday with Cuban pianist Robertico at Garbo´s, Pulpito 142, and a great mariachi band at Tequila´s Mexican Cafe , across from the Seahorse statue, Wed. through Sunday at 8:30 p.m.

There´s more but I don´t know all the events in advance, so watch the newspapers for latest information.

TIPS ON PROTECTION FROM YOUR MICROWAVE
As a seventh grade student, Claire Nelson learned that di(ethylhexyl) adepate (DEHA), considered to be a carcinogen, is found in plastic wrap, and that the FDA had never studied the effect of microwave cooking on plastic wrapped food. Claire began to wonder if cancer causing particles could seep into food covered with household plastic wrap while being microwaved. Three years later, with encouragement from her high school science teacher, Claire set out to test what the FDA had not.

Since Claire did not have the equipment to do this testing, the National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson, Ark. agreed to help her. The research center, which is affiliated with the FDA, let her use its facilities to perform her experiments that involves plastic wrap in virgin olive oil heated in the microwave. She tested four different plastic wraps and found not just the carcinogens, but also xenoestrogen was migrating into the oil. Xenoestrogens are linked to low sperm count in men and to breast cancer in women. Throughout her junior and senior years, Claire made two trips a week to the facility to work on her experiment.

An article in Options reported that "her analysis found that DEHA was migrating into the oil at between 200 parts and 500 parts per million. The FDA standard is 0.05 parts per billion." Her summarized results have been published in science journals. Claire Nelson received the American Chemical Society´s top science prize for students during her junior year and fourth place at the International Science and Engineering Fair as a senior. "Carcinogens--At 10,000,000 times FDA Limits".

On Channel 2, Huntsville, Al., Dr. Edward Fujimoto, manager of the Wellness Program at Castle Hospital was discussing dioxins and how dangerous they are for us. He said that we should not be heating our food that contains fat in the microwave using plastic containers. He explained that the combination of fat, high heat and plastics releases dioxins into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body. These dioxins are carcinogens and highly toxic to the body. He recommended using glass, Corningware or ceramic containers for heating food, so you get the same results without the dioxins. Such things as TV dinners, instant soups etc. should be put into another container of glass or ceramic. Instead of covering food with saran wrap, use a paper towel, to avoid the toxins dripping into the food.

Also remember to be careful when you remove a cup of boiling water from the microwave and add instant coffee or tea, that it does not boil up out of the cup and burn you. Do not overfill the cup and wait a few seconds before adding anything to the hot water, then sprinkle it in slowly.
