 THE BOTANICAL GARDENS OF VALLARTA
I have always thought that Vallarta with it's tropical climate should have a botanical garden, and now the idea has become a reality with the dream of owner Bob Price, who purchased 25 acres south of town a couple of years ago and after much hard work has opened the Botanical Gardens of Vallarta.
Bob was owner of the Mango Tree restaurant at Cocoa Beach, Florida and has created a larger scale garden restaurant at his botanical gardens. There is also an orchid farm and he, along with orchid grower T.J. Hartung have organized an Orchid Society.
A cobblestone drive winds into the gardens with jungle plants and colorful flowers, as well as 6000 blue agave plants in the background. This plant is the source of tequila. On the property there is a natural swimming hole, waterfalls, a tropical bird sanctuary, jungle trails and a fern grotto.
The location is 24 kilometers south of Puerto Vallarta on the coastal highway. Three kilometers past the village of Las Juntas and Los Veranos is the Plantation House, perched on a ridge overlooking the jungle. Continue to Km marker 24 and into the driveway of the Botanical gardens. You can take the bus which goes to El Tuito. Free admission. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tues. through Sunday.
