APRIL EVENTS
Happy Easter to everyone! Puerto Vallarta will soon be full of Mexican families enjoying their spring vacations at the beach. This is a Mexican tradition during Semana Santa, so everyone leaves the big cities and heads for the nearest beach resort. Fiesta is in the air! The foreign tourists are heading back to spring weather in their home towns and to the annual "income tax preparation" instead of a fun time at the beach. Vallarta has had lots of young tourists or "spring breakers", but they have been a well behaved group and not the rowdy kind you see on TV in some beach destinations. City Hall has iniciated a campaign to prevent drinking on the streets, and banners are posted on the Malecon.

The season has been very quiet in comparison to other years and many of the businesses are having a hard time because there are fewer tourists and they are not buying much. Perhaps it is the uncertainty about the future, the length of the "war", the health of the stock market, etc. but letīs hope that all is soon peaceful in the world, so we can get back to enjoying traveling to foreign lands, buying unique crafts, art and collectibles and getting to know our neighbors. When you learn a bit of a foreign language, talk to the local residents in whatever country you may visit, you will find that people all over the world have basically the same hopes and dreams and have so much in common.

There are lots of bargains around town-many stores have sales of 20 to 30% off on many items-at Galeria Vallarta we have 20% off on all Huichol art, 25% off on craft items, nativity scenes, alebrijes, and 20 to 50% off on special jewelry.

The bronze sculptures on the Malecon that were damaged during the hurricane are gradually being replaced. The "Ladder" by Bustamante is already up and the Colunga "Chairs" are scheduled to be up this month. The work is still progressing on putting cables under the sidewalks, so several streets of Old Town have been temporarily closed, and the widening of the sidewalks is still going on.

The Mexican Film Festival was held from March 28 to April 3 and special films were shown on the Rio Cuale Island and at the newly opened theater at our local CUC University. There have been some great Oscar winning films presented also at our local movie complexes, such as Frida, Chicago, Gangs of New York, etc., so you are not out of touch with the world when you are in PV.

The Sky Satellite system brings you HBO, all the movie and news channels, concerts and events like the Oscars and Grammys, as well as sports events.

A new gallery/museum has recently been inaugurated also at the University, located in Ixtapa. Art donations will be much appreciated.

The Spotlight Players are presenting "The Odd Couple" in English, starring local talents, starting on April 4 through the 15th at Santa Barbara Restaurant. 6:30 dinner followed by the show.

The Puerto Vallarta writers club meets on Saturday mornings at 10:30 at Las Brazas Restaurant on Isla Rio Cuale.

ART NEWS
The last two Art Walks of the season will be held on April 16 and 30th, with all the 11 downtown galleries participating. There are still plenty of Art Walk maps available in all the Galleries to show you the locations of the cocktail expositions.

On April 16th Galeria Vallarta will present "Mexicoīs Masters" featuring original signed lithographs and serigraphs by famous artists such as Francisco Toledo, Alejandro Colunga, Arnold Belkin, Raul Angiano, Francisco Zuniga, Daniel Kent, Benito Zamora, Leoncio Villanueva, Manuel Lepe, and more. This is your chance to acquire an artwork that is sure to rise in value because of the fame of these artists.

"Mixed Media Magic" will be the theme of Galeria Vallartaīs show on April 30th, featuring different techniques by our talented gallery artists. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m.

Judith Ewing Morlan is presenting Susana de Lamadrid with her contemporary paintings on April 16 and a collective show called "A Second Look" on April 30.

I donīt have the themes of the shows at Galeria Uno, Galeria Arte Latinoamericana, Corsica, Equilibrium, T. Fuller Pentecost, Galeria de Ollas, Galeria Art V, Galeria Arte Popular Mexicana and Galeria Nova, but be sure to visit them and prepare to be delighted with their presentations.

The Art Nights at Marina Vallarta have concluded for the season, but the galleries remain open with ever- changing art works, so donīt miss Art of the Americas, Galeria Flores, Galeria EM (unique glass), and Puerco Azul, all located around the yacht basin, as well as Galeria Meshik and Galeria Vallarta, both in Plaza de Neptuno. Puerco Azul also has a new location on Constitution St. just off Basilio Badillio.

SOME RULES TO LIVE BY
Here are some rules for living that you can pass on to the young graduates who are so bravely going out into a scary and unsettled world. Someone sent these to me via the internet so I will pass them on for you to do the same. CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2. Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

5. When you say "Iīm sorry, look the person in the eye.
6. Be engaged at least six months before you get married.
7. Believe in love at first sight.

10. In disagreements, fight fairly. Please no name calling.
11. Donīt judge people by their relatives.
12. Talk slowly, but think quickly.
13. When someone asks you a question you donīt want to answer, smile and ask, "Why do you want to know?"
14. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
15. When you lose, donīt lose the lesson.
16. Remember the three Rs: Respect for self, respect for others, responsibility for all your actions.

Check to see what you can bring to donate on your next trip. IFC has a list of urgent needs.

Daylight savings time (what do we save??) starts on April 6.

Aero California is offering some great values on tickets - From PV to LA, Mexico City, Tijuana, etc. Email pvrviajes@prodigy.net.mx for details.

Remember to protect our right to free speech, as we see people being harassed for saying what they think. No matter what you believe, you have the right to express your opinion. However, it is best to have the correct facts before you blast off in public. The Internet is such a marvelous way to communicate with people all over the world, so we must be sure to protect our free access to this media.

Puerto Vallarta is such a safe, beautiful place to be. . . Come on Down!
