WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS MONTH Well, the Easter holidays are over and Puerto Vallarta was filled to the brim with families enjoying our perfect weather, the beaches and all the activities that are available for tourists in our city. The traffic was frantic, with no place to park in downtown, but the authorities were lenient and let people park almost anywhere they wanted during the holidays.
The Old Town Art Walk on March 30 was well attended and the expositions will continue until April 13, when the last show of the season will take place. Until that time you can view the new works of the following artists at these galleries:
Dimitar Krustev brought an impressive array of mixed media portraits of children and oils of Mexican scenes to Galeria Vallarta, while his wife, Helen Marie amazed us with her beautifully detailed acrylics of Cuetzalan weavers, the San Cristobal Market, a Huichol with his Dog and more.
Marlene Hosey´s impressionist landscapes are on display at Galeria Arte Latinoamericano. Alejandro Mondría, a young artist who specializes in mixed media and collage, is showing at Galeria Pacifico. You can still enjoy the paintings of musician Goeff Watkinson at Galeria Uno, and on April 13 they inaugurate a show by Jorge and Alberto Fregoso.
Leonardo Galerias has some interesting bold works by Exposito. Galeria Corona inaugurated works by Gustavo Machado on Mar. 30 and will present Malena de las Heras on April 13. Galeria 8 y Mas continues with their showcase of talented women artists such as Susana LaMadrid.
Some of the galleries will have collectives of their major artists on April 13. Galeria Vallarta will feature watercolors by Ana Rosa Navarro, Felipe Gutierrez, Rae George, oils by Cinthia Corona, Lorena Rojas, Stephen Fischer and Jaime Cabrera, with sculptures in various media by Ron Berg and Alicia Bueno.
April 2 is the opening of Galeria Dante´s show for Luis Castellanos, an internationally known artist of whimsical impressionist Mexican themes of tropical music, dance, etc. "Kabala" an exposition of encaustic paintings by Oaxacan artist Ixrael Montes, will continue until April 8 at Galeria Gradiva 179 Ignacio L. Vallarta, just over the south bridge.
An exposition of extraordinary photos of humpback whales by Astrid Van Dam is being presented by Open Air Expeditions at Vacas Grill Restaurant, 135 Francia, corner of Lucerna in Colonia Versalles, each night from 8 p.m. with live music by Oscar Fuentes. Open Air Expeditions offers the best whale watching tours of any group in Vallarta.
A concert of Mexican musical groups is being sponsored by the municipal Culture Dept. with Telehit Channel on the beach by the Holiday Inn on April 1 and 2nd. Free admission.
The newly remodeled Museo del Cuale is presenting an exhibit entitled "Proyecto Grafico Huichol "Zitakua-Malagua" p.m.until June 17 on the Isla Rio Cuale. Hours are 10 a.m.-5.p.m. Santa Barbara dinner theater continues with "Manhattan Nights" featuring our talented local professional musicians and Abba Cadabra opens there on April 4 which features the music of the Broadway hit "Mamma Mia".
Everyone enjoyed the premier concert of our new chamber orchestra held at the auditorium on Zaragoza Street, and the talented local and guest musicians received a standing ovation. We are looking forward to more wonderful classical music by this group during the next season.
Please pass the word to your friends who may be planning to come to Vallarta that we have a fantastic array of cultural activities going on in our little city, so they should check on current musical and art events during their stay, and to explore all the unique shops and restaurants in Old Town on all the inside streets above the Malecon. For a bit of nostalgia, sit on the park benches in the main plaza and enjoy the live music presented daily in the kiosk.
NEW METAL ARTIST Many of our clients have asked about decorative figures that can be safely displayed outdoors in gardens and on terraces. Now Galeria Vallarta is pleased to welcome a new metal artist, Ron Berg, who creates intricate sculptures and wall pieces cut from steel. Some are hand painted, some are mixed media, and many incorporate the kokopelli symbol, so popular in the southwest. There is a handsome cut work horse sculpture in stainless steel, and smaller wall pieces of horses, the tree of life, birds, as well as several wall lamps. A tall undulating metal lamp produces intriguing patterns on the ceiling. Ron, a retired engineer, devotes his time to his creative ideas and is always coming up with new and whimsical ideas, such as his painted kokopelli golfer, entitled "Tiger Woods". Be sure to drop by the gallery to see his creations, or request photos by email at webart@galeriavallarta.com.
