CONTENTS: · MAY, MONTH OF HOLIDAYS · ART NEWS UPDATE · CLAUDIA NERY SPECIAL · THE ADZINE SCENE · INTERNET TIPS
MAY, MONTH OF HOLIDAYS May 1 is Mexican Labor Day, so banks and most businesses are closed, and a parade is held in the center of Puerto Vallarta. May 3 is Day of the Holy Cross and also the Day of the construction workers, so the contractors usually have a party at the construction site for the workers and a wooden cross adorned with colored paper is placed on the highest spot of the site. Also there will be a major celebration at the Church of the Holy Cross on Lazaro Cardenas St. with processions and a fiesta with music, food and fireworks.
Cinco de Mayo is a bigger holiday in the US than in Mexico, since US residents of Latin descent celebrate their roots and culture on the 5th of May. The holiday commemorates the battle fought in Puebla, Puebla by a small Mexican army against the French invaders in 1862, where General Zaragoza (born in Texas when it was still a part of Mexico) won the battle and forced the French to retreat. This was the last time that a foreign army invaded the Americas.
Motherīs Day is celebrated on May 10th and this is a time when families honor their mothers with flowers, gifts and often invite them out to eat in a restaurant. This is a great time to find a unique gift for Mother that she can enjoy all year - such as a special piece of jewelry, an item for her favorite collection or an art piece.
Teacherīs Day is May 15th, Studentīs Day is May 23rd (Childrenīs Day was April 30th) and the Fiestas de Mayo carnival starts on May 18th. Of course we donīt want to forget the graduating students that will be completing a hard year and embarking on new and exciting pursuits.
My granddaughter is graduating from the University Of Texas at Austin with a degree in Fine Art. We have some of her artworks on display, but look forward to having a larger exposition soon.
There are lots of live music groups playing around town - Beverly and Willow, Don, Rhonda & Marcos, dīRachel and Antonio, Martin and Paco, and of course the mariachi groups at several restaurants and clubs. Come and join the fun!
ART NEWS UPDATE The last Old Town Art Walk of the season was Wednesday, April 30 and a lot of local residents and some new visitors made the rounds to see collectives of Vallartaīs favorite artists.
At Galeria Vallarta we hosted a show of Mixed Media with interesting works by Cathy Von Rohr on handmade paper with a variety of painted and embossed images, an impressive encaustic creation by Cecilia Bojorquez of rich red apples, several lovely paintings by Claudia Nery using her unique technique of colored inks, with surface etching, and some water media with additions of gold leaf. Dimitar Krustev showed his painted drawings, where he creates the image with conte crayon and charcoal, enhanced with pastels. Ruben Garcia is a master of the combination of oil and gold leaf on canvas for his abstracts and character portraits. Also shown were paintings and glass sculptures by Marcos and some sculptures of natural materials such as driftwood enhanced with natural semi precious stones, shells and coral by Barbara.
The galleries will be meeting soon to make plans for next seasonīs Art Walks and expositions, as well as directories and art/culture websites which are in the planning stages.
IFC home tours are over for this season, but will start again in November. These tours provided lots of much needed money for the local charities and education, and we expect to increase this amount next year. We are always happy to send email photos of paintings or sculptures by your favorite artists at your request.
