CONTENTS: • MAY, MONTH OF HOLIDAYS • FREE CONCERTS • HAPPY MOTHER´S DAY • PLANS FOR NEXT SEASON
MAY, MONTH OF HOLIDAYS We are always celebrating holidays in our paradise and May has the most, starting with Mexican Labor Day on May 1, Day of the Holy Cross, celebrated by the construction workers on May 3, Cinco de Mayo, the anniversary of the battle in Puebla against the French, Mother´s Day which always falls on May 10, Teacher´s Day on May 15, and Student´s Day on May 23. Also the anniversary of the founding of Puerto Vallarta falls on May 31, so a big celebration is planned. Our weather is perfect now, and although those from the north find it a bit hot midday, we suggest you enjoy an early morning walk to appreciate the brilliant bougainvillas and other tropical flowers, or a walk on the beach before the sun gets hot. Also the nights offer ideal weather to enjoy live music outdoors such as the May Music Festival featuring jazz and electronic music from May 8 to 12th in Los Arcos outdoor theater, across from the main plaza in downtown. This free event is presented by the Municipal Culture Department.
On May 15, the American Consulate is sponsoring a Festival of Altruism at the Marriott Hotel, with delicacies provided by the top gourmet restaurants of the city, entertainment, and all the proceeds going to charity. The event will be held from 6 to 9 pm in the gardens of the Marriott Casa Magna in Marina Vallarta, with tickets available at $250 pesos. Everyone raved about this festival last year, so don´t miss it if you are in town. Organizers are hoping this year's event will be even more successful than last year, when each of the 20 charitable organizations involved received a check for $13,628 pesos. For more information on how you can get involved in the 2005 Altruism Festival and/or future fundraising efforts, please contact Kelly Trainor at the US Consulate in Puerto Vallarta, 222-0069.

HAPPY MOTHER´S DAY By the time the Lord made mothers, he was into his sixth day of working overtime. An Angel appeared and said "Why are you spending so much time on this one"? And the Lord answered and said, "Have you seen the spec sheet on her? She has to be completely washable, but not plastic, have 200 movable parts, all replaceable, run on black coffee and leftovers, have a lap that can hold three children at one time and that disappears when she stands up, have a kiss that can cure anything from a scraped knee to a broken heart, and have six pairs of hands."
The Angel was astounded at the requirements for this one. "Six pairs of hands! No Way!", said the Angel. The Lord replied, "Oh, it's not the hands that are the problem. It's the three pairs of eyes that mothers must have!" "And that's just on the standard model?" the Angel asked. The Lord nodded in agreement, "Yep, one pair of eyes are to see through the closed door as she asks her children what they are doing even though she already knows. Another pair in the back of her head, are to see what she needs to know even though no one thinks she can."
"And the third pair are here in the front of her head. They are for looking at an errant child and saying that she understands and loves him or her without even saying a single word." The Angel tried to stop the Lord. "This is too much work for one day. Wait until tomorrow to finish." "But I can't!" The Lord protested, "I am so close to finishing this creation that is so close to my own heart. She already heals herself when she's sick AND can feed a family of six on a pound of hamburger and can get a nine year old to stand in the shower."
The Angel moved closer and touched the woman, "But you have made her so soft, Lord." "She is soft," the Lord agreed, "but I have also made her tough. You have no idea what she can endure or accomplish." "Will she be able to think?", asked the Angel. The Lord replied, "Not only wil l she be able to think, she will be able to reason, and negotiate." The Angel then noticed something and reached out and touched the woman's cheek. "Oops, it looks like you have a leak with this model. I told you that you were trying to put too much into this one." "That's not a leak." The Lord objected. "That's a tear!" "What's the tear for?" the Angel asked. The Lord said, "The tear is her way of expressing her joy, her sorrow, her disappointment, her pain, her loneliness, her grief, and her pride." The Angel was impressed. "You are a genius, Lord. You thought of everything; for mothers are truly amazing!" ~by Erma Bombeck~

PLANS FOR NEXT SEASON The Old Town Art Walks have ended for this season, but the gallery owners are meeting and have set the first exposition for Wednesday, October 26, with the last one on April 26, 2006. Plans are proceeding for the publicity and the dates, which will be announced soon. We look forward to an even more successful season, since the art walks have become so popular with our visitors and residents. A recent meeting with our mayor was very successful as he promised his support and participation in our cultural efforts for the next season. Even though we do not have Art Walks in the summer, due to the rainy season and some galleries closing for their own vacations, everyone is welcome to make the gallery walk during the day to see all the new art works continually being produced.
