JUNE EVENTS AND NEWS
June is a time of weddings, graduations, and vacations, with everyone thinking about summer fun. Puerto Vallarta will welcome lots of young people just out of college, as well as families who can get away now that the kids are out of school. We had our first light rain last night, washing away the dust of the last several months and giving the jungle and tropical vegetation a welcome drink. Soon we will see a renewal of the variety of lush greens that we love about our surrounding jungle.

Many people think our rainy season means rain all day, but this is not true of Vallarta. The rains come in the late afternoon or night, so you have the whole day for outdoor activities like golf in one of our various world class golf courses, going to the beach or pool, and shopping in our vast array of unique stores and galleries.

The last day of May marked Vallarta´s anniversary with a big fiesta in the main plaza, featuring a concert by guitarist Paco Renteria, and a great fireworks display. The same night the Paradise Village resort in Nueva Vallarta hosted an awards ceremony for the Celebrity Sports Tournament, with a silent auction of art, jewelry, crafts and services, a gourmet dinner and dancing to the music of Johnny Rivers. Also there was an auction of unusual trips and dates with Hollywood stars, with Marjoe Gortner as the auctioneer, whose evangelistic style raised tons of money for the Creative Coalition and the Vallarta Children of the Dump. The Creative Coalition promotes art education in public schools and the local charity provides food and gifts for the children living near our city dumpsite. Attending the event were such stars as Beau Bridges, Stephen and Bill Baldwin, Alan Cummings, Lorenzo Lamas, Hector Elizondo, Camryn Manheim, and more, who took part in the sports events and gave of their time and money for these charities.

Our small but important archeological museum on the Isla Rio Cuale has reopened after repairs of the damage done by hurricane Kenna. Many new archeological sites have been discovered in this area and we hope that they will not be looted, so the findings can be on display for everyone to enjoy and learn more about the important history of this area of Mexico It is a crime to take original artifacts out of Mexico.

Cultural events planned by the city for this month are a performance by our wonderful local Ballet Folklorico Xiutla on Friday, June 6, a gala concert by the Philharmonic orchestra of Jalisco on June 13 and various events at the Public library Los Mangos. Also the monthly concert at the Hotel Camino Real will be on Thursday, June 5th at 9 p.m.

Also there are a number of art workshops being conducted on the Isla Rio Cuale by well known local artists at the nominal prices of 130 to 200 pesos a month. Those of you who live here all year or are visiting for the summer should take advantage of this special opportunity to learn such subjects as:

Modeling in terracota taught by Francisco Curiel Quintero
Painting for adults (another class for children) by Ireri Topete
Grabado (engraving) by Fernando Sanchez
Photography by Yesiko Felix
Digital graphics by Sergio Martinez
Acting by Arturo Ortega
Theater by Alberto Fabian Sahagun
Folkloric dance by Enrique Barios Limon

Information about the hours and enrollment in the classes is available at the Dept. of Culture in City Hall or we have a brochure at Galeria Vallarta.

On Wednesday, June 25 Galeria Vallarta will present a cocktail showing of artworks by Claudia Nery and Roberto Herrera in the lobby of the Club Regina, Hotel Westin Regina, Marina Vallarta from 7 to 10 p.m. Be sure to attend this special event.

HOW OLD WOULD THIS PERSON BE?
One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events. He asked what he thought about the hootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general. The granddad replied, "Well, let me think a minute ...I was born before television, penicillin, polio shots, frozen foods, Xerox, contact lenses, frisbees, and the pill.

There was no radar, credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens. Man had not invented pantyhose, air conditioners, dishwashers, clothes dryers, well the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and man hadn't yet walked on the moon. Your grandmother and I got married first-and then lived together.

Every family had a father and a mother, and every boy over 14 had a rifle that his dad taught him how to use and respect. And they went hunting and fishing together. Until I was 25, I called every man older than I,'Sir'-and after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, 'Sir.'

Sundays were set aside for going to church as a family, helping those in need, and visiting with family or neighbors. We were before gay-rights, computer-dating, dual careers, daycare centers, and group therapy. Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions. Serving your country was a privilege; living here was a bigger privilege. We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent. Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started. Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums. We never heard of FM radios, tapedecks, CDs, electric typewriters, yogurt, or guys wearing earrings.

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios. And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey. If you saw anything with 'Made in Japan' on it, it was junk. The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of. We had 5&10-cent stores where you could actually buy things for 5 & 10 cents. Ice cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi were all a nickel. And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, but who could afford one? Too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon. In my day, 'grass' was mowed, 'coke' was a cold drink, 'pot' was something your mother cooked in, and 'rock music' was your grandmother's lullaby.

'Aids' were helpers in the Principal's office, 'chip' meant a piece of wood, 'hardware' was found in a hardware store, and 'software' wasn't even a word. And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby. No wonder people call us "old and confused" and say there is a generation gap!

...and how old do you think I am????

ANSWER: This person would be only 59 years old!
