JULY NEWS AND NOTES
Happy 4th of July to everyone (a day late due to waiting for information on events) and Happy Canada Day to our north of the border readers. This is a month to be thankful for our freedom, and even though we hear terrible news everyday about things going on in Iraq and other countries where we are fighting terrorism and people dedicated to taking away our freedom and putting themselves in power positions, we must have faith that we are doing the right thing in standing up to these tyrants. A famous quote says that the only way evil can triumph is for good men to do nothing.

The 4th of July was quiet in Vallarta, but there was a great celebration at Kit Kat Restaurant with a delicious American style dinner of barbecued ribs, potato salad, corn on the cob and apple pie with ice cream. The place was jammed with locals who are spending the summer and a fireworks display was presented at curbside right in front of the restaurant.

Free cultural events to look forward to this month are:
Grupo Antara, Latin American music at Los Arcos outdoor theater on Saturday, July 10 at 8 p.m.

Danzon-- at Los Arcos, Sunday, July 11 at 7 p.m. preceeded by the Municipal Band concert in the Kiosko at 6 p.m.

Saturdays, starting on July 10, 1 p.m. Rompecabezas, Children´s Theater directed by actress Carina Otero. Isla Rio Cuale

At City Hall, (Palacio Municipal in the patio) there is currently a great art exhibit by Hector Gerardo Becerra from Lagos de Moreno, Jal. through July 9, followed by an exhibit of art by Dr. Ayotl from July 12-25.

Special Art Show by Corinne Duriez from July 26 to 30. Corinne is our wonderful French artist who has chosen Puerto Vallarta as her home and paints the super realistic wild animal pictures. She has won both silver and gold medals for her work in France, presented by the French government, and Galeria Vallarta is honored to represent her in Vallarta. Corinne also paints many other subjects, so we will look forward to what she is presenting in this show. She also has prints of several of her creations, available at Galeria Vallarta.

There are more musical events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday nights in Los Arcos but the groups and times have not been confirmed yet, so call the Cultural Dept. in City Hall for more information.

Le Petite France Restaurant is presenting the Festival Vive la France all during July. On Friday, July 9 at 7 p.m. in the Mezanine of the restaurant there will be a special event of acting, dance and poetry with Salvador Rodriguez Aldrete at the piano and members of the Municipal Theater group. The highlight of the evening will be the presentation of a book of poetry by Gabriel Martin entitled "En el Delfin el Mar". For information on other July events at Le Petite France call 293 0900.

There have been several letters to the editor about the increase in graffiti around town that is defacing our buildings. I saw an article in the newspaper that a campaign to fight this crime is being started, so let´s hope it meets with success and we do not end up like Guadalajara which has been covered with graffiti in every area.

ALEJANDRO MATEO, A SUCCESS STORY
Around 1990, when Galeria Vallarta had not been opened very long, a young man came in and asked me to look at the jewelry he had made. He looked like a "hippie", he was very shy, but he had a big smile, so I agreed to take a look. He sat on the floor and spread out his creations--definitely not the usual Taxco jewelry--but amazingly original earrings, pendants and pins made from found objects, such as pieces of brass, copper, coins, shells, etc. He told me he could not afford silver or gold, so he worked with what he could find. I was intrigued with his concepts and bought what he had, which turned out to be popular with our clients who want something truly original and dramatic.

Over the years I continued to buy from him whenever he arrived in Puerto Vallarta from Mexico City where he lives, and as time went by, he began using sterling silver and natural stones, still putting them together in his unique style. He is not afraid to create large dramatic pieces with big crystals, fossils, turquoise, red coral, lapiz lazuli and unusual stones, all guaranteed to be authentic. His settings .are often intricate, some formed of tiny silver calla lillies surrounding the stone. Two rings that he designed cover the entire length of the finger with special silver work. Every year he brings an exciting array of jewelry for our Christmas show, which will be held on Dec. 15, each piece a true original creation.

Alejandro Mateo now has achieved success and has six workers helping him create his pieces which are shown in the best galleries of Mexico. Also he has opened a taller for grabados, (engravings) with some associates in Coyocan, and is producing very special artwork in limited editions for emerging artists. He has connections with all the talleres in Mexico City and has a fabulous selection of limited editions by José Luis Cuevas, Manuel Felguerez, Francisco Toledo, Raul Anguiano, Luis Filcer, and many more. Galeria Vallarta now has on display new works by Felguerez and Cuevas.

We are planning a special benefit auction of a number of his engravings by Mexico´s masters around the first of January, so watch for notice of the event, which collectors won´t want to miss. It makes a person feel very good to have helped a creative person to succeed in this very competitive world. Come by Galeria Vallarta to see Alejandro`s latest creations, or ask for photos to be sent by email, and watch for more in the near future.
