For information on tours, a complete restaurant guide, art gallery listings and good maps, pick up a copy of Bay Vallarta. A new map of the specialty shops in Old Town has just been printed and can be found at the Tourist office and any of the shops such as Galeria Vallarta, Sucesos, Peyote People, Sr. Frogs, Querubines, Galeria Indigena, d´Paola Boutique and more which you will find on the map.

You can also get a summer art gallery guide at the tourist office or any of the central galleries. A great website for the most information about Vallarta events is www.banderasnews.com

There is never a dull evening in our little town. The rainy season has started, but with only light rains at night so far. Things are turning greener, the humidity is back, but the temperature is not high. Remember to be careful about too much sun and drink lots of water.

TIPS FOR SUMMER

Tequila is the most popular Mexican drink, but there´s more uses for it that you may not have considered.

Neutralize jelly fish stings. If you do not have rubbing alcohol, splash tequila over the affected area.

Eliminate swimmer´s ear - Fill an ear dropper with tequila, squeeze into the ear and let it drain out.

Clean and tighten your pores. Apply tequila to your face with a cotton ball to freshen your face.

Clean eyeglass lenses.

Clean the caulking around the bathtub or sink by spraying with tequila, wait 5 minutes and rinse with water.

You can also shine the bathroom chrome and glass fixtures with tequila.

To remove grass stains or lipstick from clothing, rub the stain with a clean cloth soaked in tequila, then rinse with water.

Cure for headaches — Cut a lime in half and rub it on your forehead.

To get rid of itch from mosquito bites, try applying soap on the area for instant relief.

Ants all over the house? Draw a line with chalk on the floor or wherever they march. See if they cross the line.

Candles will last a lot longer if placed in the freezer for at least 3 hours prior to burning.

Place fabric softener sheets in dresser drawers or put in with your towels and sheets to keep them smelling fresh.

I haven´t tried all these tips, but let me know if they work.

ART NEWS

Just because we aren´t having regular art expositions in the galleries doen´t mean that the artists have quit producing new works. At Galeria Vallarta we have just received several new oils and acrylics from Ruben Garcia in large format, some combining gold leaf. We had a sell out of almost all his work from last season so it´s great to have some new creations. Ruben is a very well known muralist who created murals at our local CUC university and has now been commissioned to do two murals at Morton College in Cicero, Illinois.

He also collaborated in a magnificent mural for the Museum of Paleontology in Guadalajara, Jalisco, featuring images of animals that inhabited the region millions of years ago. The mural measured five by eight meters. Please email webart@prodigy.net.mx if you would like to see his new paintings. Also we have a number of abstract paintings, small and large, by Steven Fischer which will be perfect in your home or condo. We are also expecting new paintings by our famous Claudia Nery very soon.

Next week we will be receiving a new selection of canvas prints by Octavio Ocampo, whose paintings captivate everyone with their illusions. You can see one image, then look closely and see many other images which make up the whole. You may know that we create our own art T-shirts, and have 2 by Ocampo, and new ones of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

Art Walk plans are proceeding with 18 central galleries participating for next season, which starts on Oct. 26. This year we will have our own website to give you an orientation of what each gallery will be showing, and have art walks every Wednesday night from 6 to 10 p.m.

OLD TOWN CONFUSION

Recently there have appeared several tile signs on the south side of the river which say “Old Town Map” and Viejo Vallarta, but which do not include the actual area of Old Town (not even the main plaza and crowned church.) The actual area of Viejo Vallarta or centro historico is located between the Hotel Rosita (Calle 31st de Octubre) and including the Isla Rio Cuale, and the name Old Town, Viejo Vallarta was established when the Asociacion de Comerciantes de Viejo Vallarta AC obtained their escrituras about 15 years ago. Since that time they have made a number of maps, advertised in numerous publications as Old Town, and have sponsored the Old Town Art Walk.

Our concern is that new tourists will be very confused when they see these maps, since they do not give the correct information and do not include the actual historic center of the city. The area they are advertising is usually known as the Romantic Zone, Los Muertos or the Southside. Since the new bridge and expansion of the Malecon makes the two areas closer together, it would be feasible to combine the publicity for both areas, but not to try to confuse our new tourists.
