· VACATION TIME IN VALLARTA · NOTICE FROM THE AMERICAN CONSULATE · CULTURAL PLANS FOR THE SEASON · THE ADZINE SCENE · AN IMPORTANT LIST VACATION TIME IN VALLARTA This month the city is full of families from all over Mexico enjoying their vacations before school starts again soon. Traffic is heavy and the beaches are full, but business is very slow as always during the summer season, and everyone is eagerly awaiting the return of the foreign visitors.
The many all-inclusive resorts have hurt the restaurants badly, since the tourists donīt leave the hotel to eat or shop, even though they do not always like the food that is served. When tourists come to a foreign country, they really should try the local restaurants, especially in a city like Vallarta with a reputation for some of the best cuisine in the world, as well as the best shopping. Also there are always free musical events and activities in Los Arcos open air theater downtown at night.
The time share vendors are more agressive than ever when they donīt sell as much, and molest the tourists who are not interested in their presentations. If you are visiting PV and donīt want to be bothered while shopping, ask your taxi to drop you at the Main Plaza (or Plaza Principal) by the crowned church, where the time share people are not allowed. Then walk on the inside streets, like Juarez, Morelos, Corona, Libertad, etc., where you will find the best prices on crafts, art, clothing, jewelry, etc. but NO TIME SHARE SALESMEN.
All the art galleries are located on the inside streets as well as in the Marina, Neptune Center and on the south side. If you or your friends experience any rude comments by salespeople on the streets or vendors trying to sell you fake silver out of their pockets, stop by the tourist office on the corner of the City Hall and report it. Try to obtain the name of the person and who they work for, so the practice can be stopped.
For those of you interested in who won the elections on July 6, it was the PRI who defeated the PAN, so our new mayor will be Gustavo, and we hope their administration will do their best to solve all the local problems such as the noisy, polluting buses, the lack of good tourist information, the lack of information signs in the central area and the just enforcement of the existing regulations. The pedestrian bridge from Olas Altas to the center of town has been stopped for lack of funds, so we donīt know when that will be finished.
NOTICE FROM THE AMERICAN CONSULAR AGENCY Some letters have been sent to the local newspapers regarding police stopping cars, mainly in the state of Nayarit, and asking for money. I checked with Kelly Trainor, our local consular agent, and she requested that if anyone has problems of this nature or other matters involving the Mexican police or transit authorities to do the following: Write down the police car number or the name and badge number of the police officer, the location of the incident, the time of day, any details about what happened, if the officer spoke English or Spanish, ask for an infraction ticket and report all this personally or by email to the American Consular Agency Then they will try to do something about the problem, as they are always concerned about anything that affects tourists.
CULTURAL PLANS FOR THE SEASON The dates have been set for the Old Town Art Walks, which will include 12 galleries and will be on Wednesday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. every two weeks, except for the December dates which will be on Saturday nights, due to the dates of Christmas and New Years. The first will be a Dia de Muertos event on Oct. 29, followed by Nov. 12 & 26, Dec. 10 & 27, Jan. 7 & 21, Feb. 4 & 18, Mar. 3, 17 & 31, and April 14. Plans are being made for a gallery directory and map in color, and we are all excited about the great artists we will be showing this season.
The dates for the Marina Art Nights have not been set, but meetings are taking place and we hope to include some new galleries and decorator shops in Plaza Neptune as well as around the yacht basin. Watch for more special events and a new image for Plaza Neptune.
A new gallery, Galeria Gradiva, just opened on Ignacio Vallarta 179, just over the south bridge. They had a delightful cocktail showing in their lovely air conditioned space on Sat. Aug. 1 featuring works by Arthur Miller and other Oaxaca artists.
