VIVA MEXICO!
September promises to be an exciting month in Puerto Vallarta as the city celebrates their independence and the revolution of 1910-17. Everywhere you look this month you see the red, white and green of the Mexican flag, street vendors carrying flags of all sizes, colorful posters for the Fiestas Patrias, shop windows decorated in red and green, and the brightly draped ramps in front of City Hall, preparing for the coronation of the Queen of the Fiestas Patrias on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. Come to see our local beauties, plus a presentation of our fabulous local ballet Folklorico Xuitla.

On Friday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. there will be a Mariachi Concert in front of City Hall on the main plaza. Not to be missed if you are in town is the Charro parade on Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. when you will see all the beautiful horses and the charros in full costume, accompanied by mariachis and band music, as this is National Day of the Charro.

Sept. 15 is the date of the "Gran Noche Mexicana" starting at 7 p.m. in the main plaza, with the presentation of the Queen of the Fiestas and her court, the Grupo Folklorico Nuevo Imagen of Guadalajara, local musicians and finalists of the Children´s contest of the interpretation of Mexican songs, plus mariachis. At 9 p.m. there will be reception of the torch of independence from a group originating in Dolores Hidalgo and the parade of the torches. At 10 p.m. there will be a reading of the Act of Independence, followed by the ceremony of the "grito" by the mayor from the balcony of the City Hall. All this followed by a fantastic fireworks display and "castillo", and a street dance along the Malecon and in the main plaza at ll.30 p.m. There will be more ceremonies on Sept. 16, commemorating the beginning of the war of Independence and a civic/military parade at 10 a.m.

During the month there are also a number of activities such as a chess tournament, a badminton tournament, bicycle races, a martial arts festival and other events. More information is available at the Cultural Dept. of City Hall. All these activities are free, so don´t believe that all the fun in Puerto Vallarta costs a lot of money. Every Thursday and Sunday there are free band concerts and dancing in the main plaza. Also on many days you will hear live music at the bandstand of the plaza. Remember the free concert at the Camino Real on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 9 p.m. followed by a cocktail get together.

News just in... The date for the Beca Charity Ball has been set - Saturday, March 13, 2004, Hotel Westin Regina. This great fund raiser for scholarships for Vallarta´s youth, it is lots of fun so you should mark your calendars or plan your trips to include this dinner dance/auction event.

REMEMBER SEPT. 11
In a message dated 8/30/03 8:57:37 PM , MLBrigati writes:
In a few days, our country will come upon the second anniversary of the tragedy of September 11th. We remember the days that followed and that one evening where we all lit candles by our front doors, on our front lawns, our porches, our decks. This year, let us join together to show that we will not forget those innocent people that lost their lives that morning. The passengers, the pilots, the people that were working at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Let us join together to show our appreciation for the brave firefighters, police officers and EMT personnel who ran to help others. To show our remembrance, our strength, our resolve and our love of our country, let's join together again.

On the evening of September 11th, rain or shine, light up the front of your home, your yard, your street, your walkway, your porch, etc. Take time and remember the events of 9/11, how deeply you were moved, scared, touched. Pray that our nation continues the fight on terrorism so that events such as this do not happen again on our soil. Pass this along and hopefully by 9/11 it will have reached many throughout the USA and perhaps even the world. What a statement to our nation, our neighbors and especially to those lost on that tragic day. We have not forgotten. Light some candles the evening of September 11th. (Don't forget to forward this message to your friends and family)
