Sept. 15 is the anniversary of the Grito de Independencia (the Cry for Independence) This day is similar to the 4th of July in the United States.

The festivities start at 10 a.m. with a volleyball tournament on the beach in front of Carlos OīBriens restaurant, and at 6 p.m. various competitions such as the burro race, a bicycle race, a race of waiters from several gastronomy sindicates, etc. between the Hotel Rosita and Los Arcos.

At 8 p.m. there will be a presentation of the Queen of the Fiestas Patrias, the Folkloric Ballet and reception of the torch of Independence from a group carrying it from Dolores Hidalgo, Gto. followed by the traditional torch parade on Calle Juarez, ending at the Palacio Municipal.

NEWS FROM TALPA
by Jenny McGill
On September l0th, Talpa de Allende will be celebrating the 360th anniversary of the spontaneous and miraculous renovation of a rotten worm eaten image of the Virgen Mary, known as Our Lady Rosario. Every year on the Monday closest to August l5 she goes visiting the ranches, blessing the crops, rivers and ponds along the way. A shrine is built to her in each home she visits and she is accompanied on her route by loud firecrackers, singers, dancers and worshipers. On the 10th of September she will return to the pueblo for her annual bath, new clothes and an afternoon walk around the flower- carpted plaza. This little image is only 19" tall and has no feet so she is carried on the shoulders of a select group of men. Her dress is designed by Salvador Agular Flores in Guadalajara. There is a waiting list of donors to pay for this dress made of imported fabric. There are seven bonafide registered Americans living in Talpa plus all those hundred who went to Al Norte, had babies and have returned to their homeland. During the rainy season there is a six-hour daily bus ride, five-hour by private car and 20 minutes on the daily flight of Aerotaxis de la Bahia.

DIMITAR KRUSTEVīS NEW BOOK
Dimitar Krustev, the world renowned painter who has exhibited his artworks in Galeria Vallarta for a number of years, has written another book, called "An Artist in Africa". This fascinating account of living and painting in Africa has great descriptions of the African countryside and the camp of Dr. Jane Goodall with her chimps. Dimitar painted a portrait of Dr. Goodall, which is included in the book.

Other books by Dimitar Krustev are "Voices in the Night", an autobiography describing his youth in Bulgaria, his art education, military service and details of how the German occupation and later the Russian take-over affected Bulgaria and itīs inhabitants; as well as "River of the Sacred Monkey", the incredible story of Dimitarīs adventures in the Lacandon Forest of Mexico while he was living with and painting the native people of that region.

Dimitar Krustevīs life has been dedicated to art, photography, writing and exploring the world. His wife, Helen Marie, is also a fine artist and together they continue their adventures and art expositions. Their next exhibit will be held at Galeria Vallarta, Juarez 263, on March 30, 2005, during the Old Town Art Walk, but a number of his paintings are always on display there.

The new book can be ordered at www.1stbookstore.com.

AN ACHEIVABLE DREAM ACADEMY

Newport News, Virginia is the location of a special school for minority and poverty striken kids which has demonstrated that these children can realize their potential of becoming productive, law abiding , well educated citizens.

They start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance, singing the national anthem and pass around a microphone to shout "I am someone special" and "Believe in Yourself." Character education is the cornerstone of the program, which emphasizes integrity, honesty, courage, patriotism and respect for one`s self and others. Discipline and structure are the key, it is a safe place where you are going to be nurtured, but the academy director says that we donīt want to love children into failure.

Tennis is the only sport at the school and is a requirement, because it teaches discipline and good sportsmanship, doesnīt require expensive equipment and is a sport that can be enjoyed all their lives.

Results on 2004 scores available showed that 100% of the students passed algebra and geometry, 93% passed 8th grade writing and 86% passed the 5th grade writing test. About 90% of the high school graduates have gone to college with the rest joining the military.

This school could be a model for schools throughout the country to help all our children to achieve their dreams.
