CHRISTMAS IN MEXICO

We have no snow, but the Christmas decorations are going up all over town. The hotels have fabulous Christmas trees, poinsettas, piñatas and lights in their lobbies, homes and businesses feature beautiful decorations and on the drive into downtown you will see lights encircling the palm trees and decorations over the streets provided by the City Hall. The Christmas spirit is definitely alive in Puerto Vallarta.

The perigrinations to our crowned Church of Guadalupe started on Dec. 1 and will continue through Dec. 12 with groups from all over the city dressed in white carrying candles and gifts to the church, accompanied by floats, marching bands, mariachis, and Aztec dancers. This is a very special tradition in Puerto Vallarta.

On a sad note, CARLOS MUNGIA, our respected city historian, recently passed away and will be missed by all. He has written books on the history of Puerto Vallarta and was a former cultural director for the city. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family.

Christmas is the time to think of giving to others and there will be several charity benefits during December. An exhibit of art dedicated to the Virgen of Guadalupe is being held at T. Fuller Gallery through Dec. 12 with all proceeds going to the Make a Wish Foundation. Visit their new location on Corona Street from 5 to 8 p.m.

On Dec. 10th, a Grand Bazaar will be held at Nikki Beach at the Westin Regina Resort for benefit of the scholarship program of Colegio Mexico Americano.

On Dec. 11 from 7 to 11 p.m. there will be a dinner dance at the Hotel Tropicana on Los Muertos Beach. All proceeds will benefit Casa Hogar, our local orphanage.

On Dec. 17 there will be gala dinner fundraiser at the Vista Vallarta Golf Club to benefit Toys for Tots. Toys are distributed to needy children on Jan. 6, 2006 on Three Kings Day. You can also donate toys or money to purchase them at the International Friendship Clubhouse upstairs just across from the Municipal market.

Also you can start thinking of things to donate to the IFC for their annual bazaar to be held on Feb. 26, the R.I.S.E annual fundraiser on Feb. 18, and the BECA Ball silent auction for scholarships on March 4, 2006. Locations will be announced at a later date.

There are so many wonderful things available for Christmas gifts in the Vallarta stores and galleries. Art makes a very special gift and you will find selections for every taste at the weekly Old Town Art Walks on Wednesday nights from 6 to 10 p.m. Pick up a copy of the map of the best specialty shops in Old Town, (centro historico) which, by the way, is located between the Hotel Rosita and including the Isla Rio Cuale, centered with the Plaza Principal.

MISS E-MEXICO

One of our local beauties from Puerto Vallarta has been chosen Miss E-Mexico by E Entertainment. She is Grecia Ascencio and she will be hosting her own TV show. There will be a special show about her on E-Entertainment international network next Tuesday, Dec. 6th. She will be a great promoter for Puerto Vallarta and we are very proud that she was chosen.

RETIRMENT FROM A CHILD´S VIEWPOINT

After Christmas a teacher asked her young pupils how they spent their holiday away from school. One student actually wrote the following:

"We always used to spend the holidays with Grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house but Grandpa got retarded and they moved to Arizona. Now they live in a tin box and have rocks painted green to look like grass."

They ride around on their bicycles and wear name tags because they don´t know who they are anymore. They go to a building called a wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed because it is okay now and do exercises there, but don´t do them very well. There is a swimming pool too, but in it they all jump up and down with hats on.

At the gate there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out. They go cruising in their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And they eat the same thing every night... Early Birds.

Some of the people can´t get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out bring food back to the wrecked center and call it pot luck. My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment I want to be the man in the doll house. Then I will let people out so they can visit their grandchildren.
